Win over Cody not enough to crack into the top five
The Powell Panthers may have made boys’ soccer history with an early April shutout victory over then-No. 3 Cody, but that wasn’t enough to make them a top five soccer team in the eyes of the state’s voters. As they have been for the season’s first weeks, Powell remains just outside the top five poll.
Buffalo continues to hold down the No. 1 spot, receiving six of a possible seven first-place votes. Jackson picked up the only No. 1 vote not assigned to the Bison and rank a comfortable No. 2 going into this week.
Worland, a 3-0 winner over Powell recently, moved up to take Cody’s former spot in the poll at No. 3. Behind them, Lander breaks into the 3A boys’ poll, earning votes from five of the seven voters to hold the No. 4 spot. Star Valley held steady at No. 5 for a second week.
The Panthers were tied with Cody as the next teams out. The Panthers received one fourth-place vote and two fifth-place votes, up from a lone fifth-place vote the previous week.
No other schools received votes in this week’s poll.
The latest 3A girls’ poll saw a shakeup, but Cody remained atop the standings with six of eight possible first-place votes.
Buffalo, which had been tied for fourth the previous week, received the two remaining first-place ballots and was ranked in the top three by all eight voters to leapfrog to No. 2 this week.
Star Valley holds steady at No. 3 with Lander tumbling down two spots to No. 4. Jackson, which had been tied for fourth the previous week, now sits alone in fifth place.
Worland was the only other school to receive votes in the latest girls’ 3A soccer rankings.
Both Panther soccer teams were off last week as the team rested up and enjoyed an extended weekend. They’ll need to be ready to go this week, however.
Jackson (No. 5 girls, No. 2 boys) comes to town on Friday for a varsity doubleheader. Star Valley (No. 3 girls, No. 5 boys) comes to Powell on Saturday as the Panthers again have the opportunity to cause a seismic shift in the state’s boys’ and girls’ soccer hierarchy.
The Panther girls are currently 0-4 on the year. Powell’s boys carry a 4-3 record into this week’s action.
