At an extremely competitive 3A West Regional Tournament the Powell High School volleyball team came up short of qualification, losing to Cody 3-1, pulling a reverse sweep against Lyman in the consolation round before being swept by Mountain View to end the Panthers’ season.

Heading into the tournament as the No. 8 seed the Panthers (17-17-1) matched up with the No. 1 seeded Fillies (33-2) for the second time in as many weeks.
The Panthers kept things close early against their rivals, only trailing 12-10 midway through the first set.
Cody started to pull away from that point, quickly expanding its lead and building an advantage the Panthers couldn’t overcome.
The Fillies pushed ahead and took the first set by double digits 25-15.
The Panthers took the lead in the second set, earning a 9-6 advantage.
Powell built the lead to 13-8 after a hit out by the Fillies and forced a Cody timeout.
The Panthers held their lead for much of the set, before a late charge by the Fillies made it 19-18 and forced a Powell timeout.
The two teams exchanged leads and timeouts, as Powell led 24-23 and 25-24 at separate points, but the Panthers were unable to find the winning point as the Fillies capitalized on a kill and two Panther errors to win 27-25.
Neither team found an advantage in the third set, as the two were deadlocked midway through at 12 each.
That trend continued throughout, as the Panthers tied it at 22 on a hit into the net by the Fillies.
Cody took the lead on a kill, forcing a Powell timeout.
Hali Hancock’s kill tied it at 23, before another Hancock kill made it 24-23 and forced a Cody timeout.
The Fillies couldn’t get the ball over on the ensuing serve and Powell won 25-23.
In the fourth set the Fillies immediately built an 8-2 advantage, as the Panthers continued to trail throughout, including being down 19-11.
Five straight points capped by a block by Ava Brewer and Hancock cut the lead to 19-16 and forced a Cody timeout.
A hit out and a Leah Graham ace made it 19-18, before the Fillies reeled off three straight to make it 22-18.
Powell could not pull closer, as the Fillies took the 25-20 win to finish the 3-1 set win.
“I was extremely proud of how the girls played against Cody in our first match, that may be the best we have played all season,” coach Anna Flitner said.
Kaedenze Carter led with 11 kills and 11 digs, Graham had 24 assists and three aces, while Hancock had six blocks, three solo.
POWELL 3, LYMAN 2
(14-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-23, 15-9)
Dropping to the consolation bracket the Panthers matched up with No. 5 seeded Lyman (17-17-1).
The Panthers fell behind early, trailing 7-1 against the Eagles.
Powell struggled to chip away in the first set, as Lyman cruised and took a 25-14 win.
Another Lyman quick start helped the Eagles build a four point lead early.
This time Powell didn’t let Lyman pull any further away, but continued to trail late in the set 19-15.
The Panthers finally pulled close after a Graham kill made it 20-19 and a hit into the net tied the match at 20 and forced a Lyman timeout.
Powell took the lead on a Hancock kill, but three straight Eagles points reclaimed the lead 23-21.
The Panthers were unable to get closer, as the Eagles took the 25-22 win.
The third set did not follow the trend of the first two, as Powell remained close and even held the lead midway through 12-10 after a Carter kill.
Lyman fought back and took the lead 21-19, but Powell tied the match at 21 on a Kindyle Floy kill.
Powell took the lead on a net violation by the Eagles, but two straight by Lyman made it 23-22.
The Panthers tied it on a block into the antenna, but an error by the Panthers put them down to their final point of the season trailing 24-23.
Hancock’s kill to the corner tied it at 24, but a hit out by Powell gave Lyman the lead again 25-24.
Hancock’s hit was deflected out, and a block by Brewer and Autumn Kidd made it 26-25 Powell.
A hit into the net made it 27-25 Powell and gave the Panthers life down 2-1.
“I think it took us a while to find our groove right away Saturday morning against Lyman, but I am proud of the girls for not giving up and for finishing the match strong,” Flitner said. “I think a big part of our ability to come back in that game was how we were working together as a team and staying consistent toward the end.”
Powell led early in the fourth set before the Eagles came back to tie it at 12.
Lyman took the lead before the Panthers pulled ahead for good.
Each time the Eagles got close the Panthers closed the door, holding on for a 25-23 win on a Floy kill that was blocked out to force a fifth set.
Powell took the lead immediately up 5-1, and continued to maintain that lead throughout.
The Panthers completed the reverse sweep on another block by Brewer and Hancock to win 15-9.
“They were able to prove to themselves that they are able to come back from a deficit and they can do hard things. A reverse sweep is not an easy feat,” Flitner said.
Carter led with 17 kills just ahead of Brewer with 15 and Hancock with 13.
Graham led with 40 assists; Ava Teten led with 36 digs, Carter had 27, Graham had 24, Floy had 16 and Abigail Visocky had 15.
Hancock again had six blocks, three solo, just ahead of Kidd with four while Visocky had two aces.
MOUNTAIN VIEW 3, POWELL 0
(25-17, 25-20, 25-16)
With a state berth on the line the Panthers took on the second seeded Buffalos (24-13-1).
The Buffalos came out strong against the Panthers, building a big advantage and rolling to a 25-17 first set win.
Powell showed fight in the second but came up short 25-20, and the Panthers were unable to find a way back into the third set and fell 25-16 as their season came to a close.
“Our Mountain View game was not our best performance of the season,” Flitner said. “I think we got frustrated with ourselves and were unable to build each other back up when we needed it. As soon as players look like they are functioning independently rather than with the team as a cohesive unit, we often have a difficult time.”
Carter led with eight kills, Graham had 20 assists and 2.5 blocks, Teten had 18 digs just ahead of Carter with 13 and Floy with 11, while Teten and Graham each had an ace.
SEASON ENDS
Following a season that saw the Panthers go .500 for the year coach Flitner is already excited for next year with essentially the same group, as only two seniors leave the program.
“The huge benefit of this season was getting several players experience — we are a young team with a lot of potential,” Flitner said. “I am excited for their season next year already.”
Powell will lose one starter in Hancock as a middle blocker, as well as a big piece off the bench as manager Anai Torres also graduates this year after being a key part of the program.
“We are losing two seniors and we are all eternally grateful for their contributions. Hali improved so much over the last year and it was so fun watching her thrive in a leadership role. She also had a great tournament performance,” Flitner said. “Anai, our manager for the last two years, will also be greatly missed. She is a huge supporter from the bench, always on top of things and is truly one of the best kids I have had the pleasure of knowing.”
