Two dominant performances led to a pair of wins for the Powell High School girls’ soccer team, as the Panthers defeated Newcastle 7-0 on Friday and Douglas 5-2 on Saturday to open the season 2-0 at home.
POWELL 7, NEWCASTLE 0
Hoping to start on the right foot, the Panthers (2-0) welcomed in an opponent from the east in the Dogies (0-1) on Friday.
Powell did just that, as Aspen French fired home a shot to make it 1-0 six minutes in.
Eight minutes later another Powell freshman, Mady Agee, got the first of her career as well to make it 2-0.
“The area I was most pleased with in regard to the freshmen is how well they took to verbal, tactical instruction,” coach Danny Agee said. “They were able to apply what we had been working on along with verbal instruction and it was very difficult for the other teams to defend.”
Senior Ivy Agee got her first goal of the season with 23 minutes left in the first half, and French added her second goal just 30 seconds later to make it 4-0.
Continuing to lead and control the ball the Panthers added a fifth before the halftime whistle, as Ivy Agee got her second after dribbling through the Dogies’ defense.
Throughout the second half the Panthers dictated play but couldn’t find a sixth goal, until Ivy Agee completed her hat-trick directly from a corner with 9:49 left in the game.
Mady Agee added her second with three minutes remaining as the Panthers walked away with a 7-0 win to open the year.
“I was very pleased with the way we were able to come together as a team,” coach Agee said. “The first game is always stressful but after a few minutes they really seemed to settle in.”
POWELL 5, DOUGLAS 2
Continuing at home against another 3A East team the Panthers welcomed in the Bearcats (0-2) on Saturday.
Powell had plenty of opportunities early on, but couldn’t find the back of the net as it remained 0-0 after the first 15 minutes.
Ivy Agee finally got the Panthers on the board with 21 minutes left in the half, as she took a throw-in and quickly fired a shot from 30 yards out that went over the keeper’s head to make it 1-0.
Powell continued creating chances and was not really challenged, but couldn’t get a second goal before the halftime break still leading 1-0.
The Panthers again had chances early and often in the second half, before finally breaking through again inside the first 15 minutes.
French got her goal finishing off a corner kick, and Ivy Agee got her second just a minute later to quickly make it 3-0.
She completed her hat-trick shortly just four minutes later, as the flurry of Panther goals made it 4-0.
Douglas got one back on a ball that was fumbled into the Panther net, but Ivy Agee added a fourth goal to make it 5-1 with seven minutes left.
The Bearcats added one more with 5:30 remaining to make the final score 5-2.
“We are going to keep working on our passing connections in order to speed them up and I would like us to recognize when to switch the field sooner in order to exploit the imbalances more effectively,” coach Agee said after his team’s first two games.
HOME CONTESTS CONTINUE
Powell continues its flurry of home games against 3A East teams with a contest against Buffalo (0-2) at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
“Honestly, all I want us to do is improve our game and take it to every opponent; this week is no different,” coach Agee said. “Buffalo has some solid players and I am sure they will be a challenging team to beat; however, I have a lot of faith in this group and I am sure they will step up their game.”
