A group of Powell High School students is competing with the Lovell indoor track and field team, and saw their first meet last week.
The team saw several impressive performances from the Powell athletes, including a handful of first-place finishes on Jan. 23 in Gillette. Jenna Hillman finished first in the girls’ 400-meter dash, and the boys’ 1600-meter sprint relay team — made up of Powell’s Kadden Abraham and Ben Whitlock and Lovell’s C.J. Lindsay and Cameron Carpenter — also won.
Hillman broke two PHS records in the 55-meter and 200-meter sprint, also breaking three Lovell sprint records. Cassidy Miner broke the Powell record in the shot put, placing second at the meet.
On the boys’ side, Abraham broke Lovell’s 55-meter hurdle record, finishing second in the event.
Beyond these standout performances, coach Jason Hillman was pleased with the entire group’s outing.
“All of the Powell athletes competed very well at the meet,” coach Hillman said. “For many of them, this was their first indoor track meet experience and they were excited for the challenge. Our Panthers held their own against the larger schools we competed with.”
Overall, the LHS boys’ team finished third at the meet — behind Kelly Walsh and Cheyenne East high schools — with the girls taking fourth.
