After a quick Easter break the Powell Panther track and field team took a smaller group to Sheridan on Tuesday to take part in the Gary Benson 3A/4A Clash, taking on tough 4A competition as well as some 3A teams from the east and west.
The girls grabbed some top finishes, led by Kinley Cooley who finished second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 25.75 seconds.
Powell also had a trio of third place finishes, as Kenna Jacobsen took third in the 800 meters (2:30.18), Karee Cooley finished third in the 1600 meters (5:26.03) and Paige Sanders placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 9 inches.
“The kids did a pretty good job of competing coming off a short break,” coach Scott Smith said. “Some were a little rusty, others were fresher after a bit of rest.”
Additional top eight finishes for the Panthers included Sanders who took sixth in the long jump (16-11 3/4) and Salem Brown who took eighth in the 3200 meters (15:24.51).
The Panthers added a third qualifying team in the 4x800 relay, the fastest to date, as the quartet of Jacobsen, the Cooley sisters and Shelby Zickefoose took second with a time of 10:04.98.
The girls finished sixth as a team with 41 points, as 4A Natrona County finished with the team title with 138.5 points. Powell was the second highest placing 3A team behind Cody.
On the boys’ side, the Panthers only mustered eight points, as Korbyn Warren placed sixth in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:53.38 and Landon Hyde placed sixth in the high jump clearing 5-8.
The other event to place in the top eight was the 4x100 relay of Lincoln Crawford, Karcher Foley, Braxton Nelson and Breckyn Kobbe which finished in 46.1 seconds.
“It was really good for our runners to race against some of the best all-class kids in the state,” Smith said.
The Panther boys finished ninth as a team, as Sheridan dominated the boys’ competition with 205.5 points.
Powell will stay closer to home the rest of the week, as the Panthers head to Cody today (Thursday) at 3 p.m. for the Cody Trifecta which will also include Worland as the third team. The Panthers then head to Cowley at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to take part in the Rocky Mountain Invite.
“The kids just need to stay focused on the basics and keep improving,” Smith said.
