Take on Cody today

The Powell Panther tennis teams hit the road to continue conference action in Jackson on Friday and Sheridan on Saturday. The Panthers struggled to win matches, as the boys won two total matchups over both days and the girls won one.

BOYS

JACKSON 4, POWELL 1

Leading the boys was Nathan Preator at No. 1 singles, who took the first set against Emelyn Baev 7-5 before losing a quick second set 0-6.

Preator bounced back and won in a tiebreaker third set 7-6 (7-5).

“There were small adjustments from Nate trying to kind of eliminate some of the shots that the kid was pretty effective with,” coach Joe Asay said. “A really great battle to finish out there on top in that one for sure. He’s (Preator) a battler, he doesn’t give up.”

Powell struggled through the remainder of the lineup, as Calvin Opps fell in two straight 6-0 sets to Luke Gentile at No. 2 singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Ryan Barrus and Memphis Solberg fell to Jaden D’Amours and Will Freymann in straight sets 6-3, 6-2; Kazdyn Lee and Isaac Dunsey fell in straight sets to Finn Benniga and Oliver Steinberg 6-3, 6-2; and Jonathan Clark and Josh Waite fell in No. 3 doubles to Hunter Bingham and Max Gentile in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.

SHERIDAN 4, POWELL 1

In Sheridan on Saturday the Panthers again mustered one win from Preator at No. 1 singles, as he came back from a 2-6 opening set loss to Ben Bujans to win 6-3 and 7-5 over the second and third sets.

Barrus stepped in at the No. 2 singles spot, falling to Drew Miller in two straight 6-4 sets.

Opps and Solberg teamed up at No. 1 doubles, falling in straight sets to Matt Brown and Eric Venn 6-3, 6-1.

Dunsey and Sawyer Wormald fell in straight 6-0 sets to Aaron Lansing and Lawson Woodrow at No. 2 doubles, while Clark and Waite fell to Sam Wilcock and Christian Lamen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

GIRLS

JACKSON 5, POWELL 0

In Jackson, the girls were unable to find any match wins, as Naomi Whipple fell against Caroline Brokaw at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Bailee Allred fell to Annabel Millham in straight 6-3 sets at No. 2 singles.

Kyra Morrow and Isabelle Urbach fell at No. 1 doubles 6-3, 6-4 to Harper Maher and Zoe Bosch.

Elaina Kousoulos and Emily Jensen took the first set against Sarah Horan and Margaret Tauren 7-6 (7-3) before losing the final two sets 3-6, 1-6.

Leah Pittman and Noelle Leighton fell in straight 6-0 sets to Lola Mizelle and Liesel Maher at No. 3 doubles.

SHERIDAN 4, POWELL 1

In Sheridan, Whipple fell at No. 1 singles to Ella Bilyeu 6-1, 6-2, while Allred got the lone win for the Panthers at No. 2 singles 6-2, 7-5 against Larrisa Hoffman.

“A good solid win there,” Asay said. “Maybe just a little bit off against Jackson, I think certainly (that was) one she could, on another day, get a win out of. She’s (Allred) just playing really good, solid tennis.”

At No. 1 doubles, Morrow and Urbach fell to Avery Ligocki and Abby Venn 6-1, 6-2; Kousoulos and Jensen fell to Gracie Hogan and Brittany Geissler at No. 2 doubles 6-0, 4-6, 6-4; while Leighton and Anna David fell at No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-3 to Mallorie Akers and Lizzy Lansing.

CODY MATCHUPS

The Panthers will be busy this week taking on their Park County rivals, starting with matches today (Thursday) at 4 p.m. in Cody.

“They (Cody) did not get a chance to make the trip to Jackson on Thursday. They’ve rescheduled that one, but their trip to Sheridan on Friday looked a lot like our results,” Asay said. “So it will be interesting to see how we match up when we head over there on Thursday … I think we’ll match up pretty well with the Cody kids.”

Powell then returns home to take on the Broncs and Fillies in the return matches at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
