Five earn all-conference status
The Powell Panthers were a narrow third at the 3A West conference swim championships last weekend. The team scored 230 points, finishing just eight points behind conference runner-up and meet host Kemmerer, crowned one conference champion and had five swimmers earn all-conference recognition.
Nic Tracy took top honors in the 100 backstroke, also earning all-confrence honors for his championship race. Tracy was also third in the 100 butterfly among 3A West competitors.
Other all-conference performers included Ben Wetzel (third in the 200 and 400 freestyle), Quin Wetzel (second in the 200 individual medley) and Billy Baker (third in the 100 backstroke). The 400 free relay, comprised of Tracy, Baker, Jakob Bowers and Jarred LaPierre, also earned all-conference recognition.
Other notable awards went to Telton Pedersen, who earned the Wyoming High School Activities Association’s sportsmanship award. Panther coach Jerry Rodriguez was named 3A West assistant coach of the year co-honors along with Kemmerer’s Kammi Dietric.
LaPierre was the only swimmer to add a qualifying time for next week’s state meet in Gillette. LaPierre qualified in the 50 freestyle.
The Panthers will take this weekend off to practice and prepare for the state swim championships.
