The Powell High School girls’ swimming and diving team returned to the pool Saturday for a home event. The Panthers hosted a varsity quad at Powell Aquatic Center, with Buffalo, Sublette County and Cody competing.

The Panthers once again finished with the highest overall score. PHS earned 389 team points, while Cody finished in second with 298 points.

PHS didn’t win as many events as usual, only taking two of the 12 events: Lucia Harder in the 100 butterfly, and Sydney Legler in the 500 free. However, the Panthers’ deep roster played crucial in team scoring.

“Our team depth, combined with invitational scoring, proved decisive,” head coach Bob Smartt said. “Our athletes placed second in eight events and third in four events.”

The Panthers achieved 16 new personal-best times at the event. Four swimmers — Baylee Brence, Elizabeth Liggett, Aubree Fisher and Olivia Halter — earned double personal bests.

Another highlight came with Liggett’s third-place finish in the 200 individual medley. She finished behind defending state champion Makenna Lambert of Buffalo and California transplant Tara Joyce but still logged a stellar time of 2:24.94, good for fifth on Powell High School Wall of Fame in the event.

Paige Thomas also achieved something unusual. She achieved a state qualifying time in the 200 medley in her first time swimming in the event, recording a 2:41.36.

PHS will hit the road on Friday for a meet in Riverton. The last time PHS competed there, the Panthers cruised to a first-place team finish.
