A key player on the 2020 Panther football team has pledged to play at the next level.

Powell High School senior Jesse Trotter verbally committed to Black Hills State University on Tuesday. Trotter, who received the offer during Christmas break, is the first player from this year’s squad to commit to playing college football.

A Division II school that competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, BHSU’s impressive program tradition wowed the PHS wide receiver when he visited the Spearfish, South Dakota, campus in October.

“The coaching staff really caught my attention,” Trotter said. “They’re doing a great rebuilding process and are focused on making great players and great people. I really like that.”

Trotter said he hopes to primarily play wide receiver but is open to other positions, including tight end. He hopes to “add versatility to wherever they need” him.

This isn’t the only connection between Powell and Black Hills State: Panther head coach Chase Kistler played at BHSU for three seasons.

The coach helped guide Trotter as he weighed his college options.

“I told Jesse it’s his decision,” Kistler said. “The college and community has really grown, and I told him he’d know quickly if it’s the right place.”

Trotter led the Panthers in receiving yards in his senior season, with 282 yards on 13 receptions. He caught two touchdowns.

Some states didn’t play football in the fall, so Trotter is thankful for the opportunity to have competed in 2020.

“It was definitely an awesome last season,” Trotter said. “I’m glad we got to play because it definitely added to my college potential.”

Trotter is also grateful for the various coaches who assisted in improving his skill set and helping him “keep persistence through it all.” He also thanked Powell native and former BHSU athlete Nevin Jacobs for being a role model to him and the rest of the PHS football team.
