The Powell High School girls’ swimming and diving team traveled to Riverton for its first competition on Saturday, excelling in the season-opening event.
Leading the way was senior diver Emma Karhu, who won the 1-meter six-dive category with a score of 280.75 in Riverton. That was her new personal best and the new PHS record, breaking the old one set by Lindsay Bischoff in 2002 (237.85).
“[Emma] made smithereens of the school six dive record,” PHS head coach Bob Smartt said. “Breaking the old record by 42 points is stunning.”
At the Riverton Pentathlon, Powell competed with Kemmerer, Worland and Riverton. With COVID-19 restrictions limiting how many teams can compete per meet, three other schools (Lander, Jackson and Pinedale) competed at Lander, in coordination with Riverton.
Of the six total events, the Panthers took first place in five of them among the four teams at the Riverton pool. The Panthers set 29 personal bests, and 11 athletes achieved 24 qualifying times for the Class 3A State Meet.
In the 100 fly, sophomore Lucia Harder finished in first place with a time of 1:04.89. Three other Panthers — Addison Moretti, Emma Mitchell and Sydney Legler — finished in the top five.
Lucia Harder also finished first in the 100 backstroke at 1:07.76. Her teammate, sophomore Grace Sapp, finished second with a time of 1:10.41.
Senior Elizabeth Liggett won the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 27.12. Seven of the top 10 finishers in the event hailed from PHS. She also had the Panthers’ best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing second in Riverton at 1:19.66.
In the 100 freestyle, Liggett topped the field once again, logging a time of 59.34.
The Panthers’ next meet will take place in Cody at 2 p.m. Friday, where they will look to build on their success at a four-team event.
“Depth will again be our strong suit this year,” Smartt said. “We should have one of the largest contingents at 3A State.”
