A competitive dual between the Powell High School girls’ wrestling team and the rival Cody Fillies went deep into the tiebreaking procedures on Thursday night, as the Panthers pulled out the 19-18 win on the ninth tiebreaker following both teams earning three pins on the evening.

POWELL 19, CODY 18

Bouts started in the dual at 110 pounds, as Allison LeBlanc got the Panther’s first win.

She led 7-0 after the first period, before earning a pin in the second period with 47 seconds left.

Eleasah Horsley continued the early momentum, getting a pin with 44 seconds left in the first period to make it 12-0 Powell.

In a back-and-forth affair early at 125 pounds Cody pulled ahead 9-3 after the first period to get the pin with 1:13 left in the second period to cut the Powell lead down to 12-6.

Nalani Jordan got Powell back on track at 140 pounds, earning a quick pin with 1:09 left in the first period to make it 18-6.

Cody responded at the final two weights, getting pins at 155 and 170 pounds in 1:18 and 1:19 respectively to tie the match at 18 points.

The Panthers ended up getting the win after a number of different tiebreaking procedures, as the Panthers got it on the ninth NFHS dual meet tiebreaker, as it was Aubrey Blount’s first points earned with a takedown at 125 pounds that ended up being the difference to give Powell the 19-18 win.

REGIONAL TOURNAMENT HOSTS

Following that short trip over to Cody on Thursday the Panthers had the weekend off to prepare for the 4A West Regional Tournament.

The Panthers will serve as the hosts of that tournament, welcoming in 27 teams for the tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Those will include teams from as small as Dubois all the way to Kelly Walsh as girls’ wrestling remains with only one classification.

Matches begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, as the competitors will go until the championship semifinals and the consolation quarterfinals.

Should an athlete make it to that point, being in the top eight wrestlers, they will advance to the state tournament in Casper Feb. 26-28.

Action on Saturday begins with the semifinals and consolation quarterfinals at 10 a.m. followed by the consolation semifinals and medal matches through fourth place.

The Panthers will be looking to get as many wrestlers as they can to the state tournament in front of their home crowd.
