The Powell High School girls’ track and field team yielded another qualifier in a Tuesday dual, as the Panthers fell to the visiting Fillies by a single point 246.5-245.5.
That new qualifier came in the discus, as Nyah Johnson claimed victory with a throw of 114 feet, 6 inches.
“It was very nice to see Nyah break through and get a lifetime best and automatically qualify to win the discus. A great experience for a senior,” coach Scott Smith said.
Johnson was one of seven Panther event winners, as Kindyle Floy won the 100 meter dash in 13.27 seconds, Kaytlee George won the 400 meters in 1:01.38, Karee Cooley won the 1600 meters in 5:38.64, Kate Williams won the pole vault clearing 8-6, Paige Sanders won the long jump with a leap of 15-9 1/2 and the triple jump with a leap of 36-11, while Anai Torres won the shot put with a throw of 33-7.
The Panthers also won the 4x400 relay as the team of Sanders, Lynea Christensen, Cooley and George won with a time of 4:24.11.
Additional top three finishers included Cooley second in the 400 meters (1:08.82); Shelby Zickefoose was second in the 1600 meters (5:39.31); Abigail Visocky was second in the 100 meter hurdles (17); Floy was second in the high jump (4-9); Christensen was second in the pole vault (7); Kara Sanders placed second in the triple jump (30-4); Torres took second in the discus (111-8); Paige Sanders was third in the 100 (14); Sam Edgell placed third in the shot put (31-10) and Sharae Shoopman was third in the discus (97-8).
“We would have been without a meet last week without it, so competition is always good. Getting a pretty nice day and good performances that early in the week is just the cherry on the sundae,” Smith said.
As a team the Panthers came up one point short against the Fillies at home 246.5-245.5, but have a number of athletes close to qualifying for the state meet.
“We plan on staying with the process that promotes individuals constantly improving, getting stronger, better form and learning more about the event. Ultimately our goal is for everyone to peak at state, not early April,” Smith said.
Powell has an action-packed schedule this week, starting with a meet in Sheridan today (Tuesday) at 1 p.m. for the Gary Benson 3A/4A Clash.
That meet will feature both Casper schools, both Gillette schools as well as Sheridan for 4A competition as well as Buffalo, Cody, Worland and Powell for 3A schools.
The Panthers then head to Cody for a tri on Friday afternoon against Worland and Cody, before heading to Cowley for the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Saturday.
