The Powell High School boys’ track and field team came out on top at a dominant day in Cowley on Saturday, winning the Rocky Mountain Invite by 62 points over second place and adding several new qualifying events in the process.

Sawyer Wormald took the top spot in the 400 meters with a time of 52.17 seconds to qualify, as Braxton Nelson won the 200 meters in 22.84 seconds and Lincoln Crawford was third in the 100 meter dash to add another mark in 11.63 seconds.

“It was great to see those new AQ’s (automatic qualifiers) from Sawyer, Braxton and Lincoln,” coach Scott Smith said. “It really adds insurance for the future, but even more important is for them to see that they have that versatility.”

Wormald added another victory in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.37 seconds, Dayton Lawrence won the pole vault clearing 12 feet, 6 inches, and Nelson added a victory in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 3 inches.

Additional top four finishers included Nelson who took second in the 100 meter dash (11.25); Karcher Foley placed second in the 200 meters (23.61); Korbyn Warren was second in the 3200 meters (10:30.15) and third in the 800 meters (2:08.99); Crawford was second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.85) and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles (42.96); Brady Harvey was second in the discus (134-7) and third in the shot put (42-3 1/2); Brayden Benander and David Stearns tied for third in the 200 meters (23.74); Tanner Seifert placed third in the 300 meter hurdles (42.88); Foley took third in the long jump (18-1); Breckyn Kobbe was fourth in the 100 meters (11.69); Alex Werner took fourth in the 800 meters (2:11.14); Colin Walker placed fourth in the 3200 meters (10:47.49) while Landon McDonald and Sam Williams tied for fourth in the pole vault (10).

As a team the Panthers finished with 207.5 points, 62 ahead of second placed Lovell.

Powell has two meets on the agenda this week, as some of the top competitors in the state will converge in Casper on Friday for the Wyoming Track Classic at Kelly Walsh High School.

That meet will feature the top eight in each track event, top 12 in the 1600 and 3200 meters, as well as the top nine in each field event.

Field events are set to kick off at 4 p.m. with track events to begin at 4:30.

“The classic is a great honor to be invited to. We just want our kids to go down, have fun and PR. The rest takes care of itself,” Smith said.

The Panthers will also go to Lovell on Saturday, before the final regular season meet next Thursday in Cody.
