The Powell Panther boys’ track and field team finished second at the Rocky Mountain Invite, adding a new individual qualifier and relay team during a busy day in Cowley.

The Panthers earned two relay wins at the meet, winning both the 4x400 and 4x800.

The 4x800 relay came out with a qualifying time, as the team of Korbyn Warren, Colin Walker, Nathan Varian and Liam Taylor took the top spot with a time of 8 minutes, 51.07, shaving 24 seconds off their previous season best to qualify.

“We knew that group had the potential to put up fast times and it was great to see them get qualified,” coach Scott Smith said.

The 4x400 relay team of Sawyer Wormald, Landon Hyde, Taylor and Warren ran a time of 3:44.81.

Wormald was the other Panther to earn a qualifying mark, taking second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.59 seconds. Wormald also placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.81.

Other top five Panther finishers included Warren, who finished second in the 800 meters (2:10.37) and 1600 meters (4:49.13); Brady Harvey took second in the discus throwing 122 feet, 10 inches, and third in the shot put throwing 40-1 1/2; Karcher Foley placed fourth in the 200 meters (23.91); Xander Clark took fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (19.26); Conner Farwell tied for fourth in the shot put (40-1); Kaden Wolff placed fourth in the discus (118-1); Dayton Lawrence took fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (19.54) and Wormald took fifth in the triple jump (37-9 1/4).

“A large number of our young guys are really showing big improvements that if they can keep up with that, they will be in a position to bring home medals in the postseason,” Smith said.

Powell finished second as a team with 129.83 points, well behind winners Lovell which had 192 points and third placed Worland with 103.

The Panthers will take this week to prepare for one of two meets, with athletes either taking part in the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper or the Lovell Invite on Friday.

Athletes in the top eight in the sprints and hurdles, top nine in field events and top 12 in the 1600 and 3200 will be invited to the classic regardless of classification.

Smith said the qualifiers for the classic will likely not be known until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

For those not attending the classic, Smith said this will be the last chance for most athletes to try earning a spot on the regional squad.

“Some kids with this as their last chance to earn a spot will be focusing on technique while those that are state qualified will still be getting in conditioning as the main emphasis,” Smith said. “Field events will be polishing on the finer points of technique.”
