Panther boys second in Cody

Two new qualifications added

The Powell Panther boys’ track and field team added two new qualifying standards while placing second as a team at the Cody Trackstravaganza on Thursday.

Those new qualifications came in field events, as Braxton Nelson qualified with a win in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 10 inches, and Troy Cheatham qualified for the pole vault clearing 12 feet.

“Troy and Braxton prequalifying was something we had seen as possibilities from practice the last week, but I wouldn’t have predicted either a couple of weeks ago,” coach Scott Smith said.

In addition to his win in the long jump Nelson also took the top spot in the high jump, winning a jump off by clearing 6-1, while Korbyn Warren was the other individual to win an event, taking the top spot in the 1600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 51.51 seconds.

Powell added several second place finishes at the Trackstravaganza, as Karcher Foley took second in the 200 meters (23.48); Liam Taylor placed second in the 800 meters (2:09.44); Colin Walker took second in the 3200 meters (10:59.62); Lincoln Crawford took second in the 110 meter hurdles (16.78) and Sawyer Wormald was second in the 300 meter hurdles (41.92).

Additional top five Panther finishers included Taylor, who took third in the 400 meters (55.28); Warren placed third in the 800 meters (2:10.63); Wormald placed third in the 110 meter hurdles (17.18); Michael Legerski took third in the 300 meter hurdles (43.75) and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (18.03); Cobey Khan placed fourth in the 400 meters (56.97); Nathan Varian was fourth in the 1600 meters (5:19.71); Conner Farwell was fourth in the shot put (39-8); Landon Hyde took fifth in the 400 meters (57.44); Walker took fifth in the 900 meters (2:16.1); Michael Stensing placed fifth in the 1600 meters (5:37.35) and Brady Harvey was fifth in the discus (115).

As a team the Panthers finished with 178.5 points, well behind winner Cody which had 298.5 points but well ahead of a smaller third placed Lovell team with 51 points.

Competing against some of those top athletes in Cody helped bring out the best in some of the Panthers just before regionals, which will kick off the postseason this weekend.

“We have been blessed for years with some of the top track teams in the state [in] all classes [that] have been in the Big Horn Basin, so we get to compete against great teams every meet we go to,” Smith said.

Regionals kicks off this weekend at home, as the Panthers will be hosting the meet on Friday and Saturday.

Those who have not prequalified for the state meet will have an opportunity to qualify for state next week in Casper, as finishing in the top eight individually and top four in a relay will qualify you for the state meet even if you do not meet the prequalifying standards.

“We are hoping to get the most medals and the most state qualifiers that we can, focusing on fundamentals and having a lot of fun,” Smith said.

Events on Friday will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude in the early evening before starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the last event scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
