Every team from every classification converged on Riverton this past weekend for the annual Ron Thon Memorial on Friday and Saturday, as the Powell High School boys continued to show growth to end January while also defeating Thermopolis in a dual on Thursday en route to the tournament.

The Panthers were led by Jonathan Hine, who won his first two matches at 106 pounds via an 18-3 tech fall and a pin to reach the semifinal match.

He fell via an 18-1 tech fall, and lost a close 18-13 decision in the consolation semifinal to reach the fifth place match.

Hine ended with a 9-6 decision win to finish the weekend fifth overall.

“Jonathan wrestled well … A really good weekend for Jonathan,” coach Nick Fulton said.

Sean Lowe found the only other win for the Panthers in the varsity tournament going 1-2 at 132 pounds, as Dylan DeBoer went 0-2 at 120 pounds, Russell Goolsbey went 0-2 at 126 pounds, David Yates was 0-2 at 132 pounds and Tyler Wenzel was 0-2 at 144 pounds.

Powell finished with 16.5 points at the varsity level to take 32nd, as Cody won with 206 points.

“I didn’t think it was our best performance this weekend,” Fulton said. “Not for lack of effort, kids are trying hard in their matches, but just a little inconsistent right now. We need to develop some consistency here in the next four weeks.”

The Panthers entered 14 athletes into the junior varsity tournament.

Justin Marquez at 190 pounds and Jacob Christofalos at 285 pounds both won their respective weight classes, with both winning every match by pin.

Tristan Snell placed fourth at 215 pounds and Isaiah Torres placed sixth at 165 pounds as the other Panthers to place in the tournament.

“Our young guys are growing. These last two weeks, getting to wrestle some JV competition has done them wonders,” Fulton said. “Their attitudes are good and they’re getting better each time they step on the mat … Justin is really growing into his own, competing well … Jacob’s only a second year wrestler. He’s growing leaps and bounds right now.”

The PHS boys finished sixth as a team with 131 points in the JV tournament.

In Thermopolis the Panthers picked up a 54-26 win, as Powell won with a number of forfeits as only five matches took place, with the Bobcats winning each of those.

“Thermopolis just didn’t have the numbers,” Fulton said of the dual win.

The Panthers head into the final two weeks of the regular season this week, starting with a dual at home against Lovell today (Tuesday) at 5 p.m.

Powell then hosts Lander at 5 p.m. on Thursday for senior night as the Panthers’ final home dual of the season.

They then head on the road to Greybull on Saturday to take part in the final tournament of the regular season.

“We need to be consistent. Steady wins the race,” Fulton said. “We teach every night, we go hard every night. We’re not to our potential yet. That’s where we’re focusing on getting in the next four weeks … We have some pretty good kids. Taking it one day at a time.”
