Panther boys basketball slides to fourth

The Star Valley Braves are the new No. 1 team in Class 3A boys basketball, according to the latest Wyopreps coaches’ and media poll. The Braves, who host Powell this Friday night, pulled in 12 of a possible 22 first-place votes to end the Panthers’ three-week reign atop the polls.

Lander, which handed Powell its first loss to a 3A team this season, narrowly edged Torrington for second-place in the poll. The Tigers grabed five first place votes, compared to three for Torrington.

Star Valley, with 273 overall points in this week’s poll, holds a comfortable 45-point lead over Lander (228). The Tigers’ gap over Torrington (222) is just six points.

Powell, with 189 points overall, received the remaining two first-place votes in the poll. The Panthers were named on all 22 ballots received this week and ranked among the top four 3A schools on all of them. Half of the ballots had Powell ranked No. 4.

Wheatland (51) was a distant fifth in this week’s balloting. Buffalo, Rawlins, Douglas and Lyman each received mention on at least one ballot this week.

Powell travels to Star Valley on Friday, then heads to Jackson for a Saturday afternoon contest.

In the sixth weekly statewide wrestling poll offered by Wyowrestling.com, the Powell Panthers maintain their grip atop the Class 3A standings. Powell and Douglas remain unchanged atop the rankings of the top six schools. Lander, Star Valley, Worland and Mountain View complete the new top six standings.

Individually, the Panthers continue to have two wrestlers ranked No. 1 at their respective weight classes. Waylon Bays holds down the top position at 145 pounds for another week. The Panthers’ other No. 1 grappler has changed, however.

Charles Wittick bounces up to assume the No. 1 spot in the 106-pound rankings thanks to a series of recent impressive showings on the mat. Olie Olson, who had been ranked No. 1 at 170 pounds, slid down a notch to No. 2 this week. Olson has been recovering from a minor midseason injury that has limited him in recent weeks.

Other Panther individuals named in this week’s wrestling poll include Colbee Craig (third at 113), Dylan Rood (second at 120), Colton Parham (sixth at 120), Andrew Feller (third at 126), Zach Thiel (fifth at 132), Randy Andrews (second at 152), Tyler Patterson (second at 160), Olie Olson (second at 170), Zach Thompson (fourth at 195), Kurt Bullinger (fifth at 220) and Spencer Schultz (fifth at 285).
