The Powell Panther boys’ track and field team finished third and added a new individual qualifier at the D&D Invitational in Worland on April 15, which was moved up due to projected weather.
“I thought the kids that we were able to take mostly did a good job of taking advantage of the good weather we had with a short turnaround,” coach Scott Smith said.
The new Panther qualifier was Liam Taylor, who won the 800 meters and finished in 2 minutes, 1.06 seconds to earn his first individual state qualifying mark.
In addition to Taylor the Panthers claimed the top spot in the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.79 seconds. That relay consisted of Lincoln Crawford, Karcher Foley, Braxton Nelson and Breckyn Kobbe, adding a second qualifying team for the Panthers in that event.
In addition to the two wins the Panthers had a host of top five finishes, as Crawford took second in the 110 meter hurdles (16.75); Renzy Matthews placed second in the 300 meter hurdles (46.68); Sawyer Wormald placed third in the 110 meter hurdles (17.22) and fifth in the 400 meters (54.08); Brady Harvey took third in the discus throwing 123 feet, 2 inches, and fourth in the shot put (41-9 1/4); Kobbe tied for fourth in the 200 meters (23.85) and Michael Legerski finished fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (18.61).
Smith said the Panthers are continuing to show growth at the midway point in the season, but need to continue focusing on the small things in order to keep that growth going to the end of the year.
“Our young kids are showing potential and really need to learn how to focus on fundamentals to make the improvements they will need when regionals and state come up,” Smith said.
As a team the Panthers finished third with 106 points, as Lovell took the team title with 171.5 points, just ahead of Cody with 167. Host Worland was fourth with 98.5 points.
This week Powell will have plenty of opportunities to get on the track after taking the rest of last week off, starting with a quick trip to Sheridan today (Tuesday) for the Gary Benson 3A/4A Clash.
Other opportunities closer to home include a meet in Cody on Thursday before another meet in Cowley on Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Invite.
