One killed, four injured in multi-vehicle crash in Wapiti

A man was killed and four other people were taken to hospitals following a Wednesday morning crash on U.S. Highway 14/16/20 in the Wapiti Valley that involved two trucks and four motorcycles.

The highway remained closed at midday while emergency personnel continued to work the scene at milepost 32.2, near the Old Faithful RV Park.

“We expect the road to be closed for some time, and we are asking people to avoid the area and find alternate routes,” Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesman Aaron Brown said around 11:30 a.m.

Those seeking to travel between Cody and Wapiti or Yellowstone National Park can avoid the crash site by taking Stagecoach Trail, a county road that parallels the highway on the southern side of the North Fork of the Shoshone River.

Brown said around noon that the patrol was still completing its official report on the crash. Park County Coroner Cody Gortmaker said witnesses reported that four motorcycles and a Wyoming Department of Transportation truck were heading west on 14/16/20 when an eastbound pickup allegedly swerved into the wrong lane.

One man died at the scene while another person was flown to Billings for medical treatment and three others were taken by ambulance to Cody Regional Health, officials said. Gortmaker said he didn’t know the status of the hospitalized people, “but the wreckage made me stop and say a prayer for them.”

It was not immediately clear as to which vehicles the injured parties were driving or riding in/on, but officials did say the driver of the WYDOT truck was not injured.

Jimmy Rush, a Wapiti resident, happened to drive by the immediate aftermath of the crash and described the scene as “horrific.” He took to social media to ask for prayers for the first responders and those involved in the crash.

“Please just pray,” he wrote.

Wednesday’s incident marks the fourth fatal motorcycle crash in Park County since early July. It occurred about five miles east of a 2016 crash that left three German motorcyclists dead and three others injured. In that case, a 61-year-old Oregon man drifted into the westbound bikers’ lane for reasons that neither he nor investigators could explain.
