Dear editor:
Paying an additional 1% on taxable purchases is a question of perceived value to the voters of Park County. The total tax expected to be collected is $19.278 million.
Voters are being asked for $7.9 million for a new senior center building in Powell, a worthy project, true, but will the value to voters be that much greater than when the project was estimated at $3.5 million when possibly associated with the Rocky Mountain Manor? It’s up to you the voter to determine.
The City of Cody is asking county taxpayers for $9.8 million to the refurbish the Cody Auditorium. This is, after all, the City of Cody infrastructure that has fallen into disrepair. Should Park County taxpayers cover that? It’s up to the voter to determine the perceived value.
The Meeteetse area is requesting $1.578 million for a senior center, a worthy cause, but also a new garbage truck. Should voters of Park County cover that? Don’t know. You the voters need to determine the perceived value.
One percent doesn’t seem like that much until you buy a $50,000 car, for instance, as 1% would add an additional $500. It’s all about perceived value.
This is an all or nothing proposition. It’s your choice.
