Ending the first game of the year with a late push the Northwest College men’s basketball team pulled away from Miles Community College on the road on Thursday, using a 14-2 run late to earn the 98-83 win to wrap up nonconference action.

The Trappers (12-5) were looking to sweep the Pioneers (9-11) to cap the nonconference schedule.
The hosts took the lead early over the Trappers, building a 20-11 advantage just over five minutes into the contest.
Northwest used an 8-2 run to pull within a single possession, before Miles pushed the lead back out to 28-19 midway through the half.
The Trappers continued cutting into the lead over the next five minutes, before eventually tying it on a Colin Hayes jumper with 4:39 remaining with the contest knotted at 34.
Another Hayes jumper gave the Trappers the lead, and Northwest eventually held a 46-43 lead at the break.
Miles started the second half strong, using a 10-0 run over the first five minutes to take a 53-46 lead.
“The second half we came out and we just looked out of sorts,” coach Andy Ward said. “We had some early, ill-advised shots. We weren’t great in our defensive intensity.”
Northwest rallied and eventually took the lead at 60-57 after a Tessi Thong 3-pointer with 12 minutes left.
Both teams exchanged the lead back and forth over the next five minutes, with the Trappers holding the largest advantage up 76-71 with seven minutes left.
A 14-2 run over the next three minutes helped the Trappers create separation late against the Pioneers, holding a 90-73 lead with 3:34 remaining.
Northwest saw out the final minutes, earning a 98-83 win.
“I was relatively pleased. It was our first game back and they (Miles) had already played two. When you come back from that long break you inevitably have to work off some rust,” Ward said. “I thought our effort was really good. We had everybody contribute. We had good play from a lot of people including our bench.”
Thong led with 22 points just ahead of Hayes with 19, while Preston Condie and Drew Larson each had 14.
Hayes led with eight rebounds, while Thong led with three steals.
REGION IX STARTS
After the quick road trip the Trappers will return home this week, kicking off Region IX North play with two home games.
Northwest starts with a game against Casper College (13-4) at 7:30 p.m. today (Thursday).
“They’re a good team, they’ve got talented guys,” Ward said. “They’ve got the second leading scoring in the nation in (Abdul) Bashir. So they’ve got some really good pieces, good talent, good athleticism.”
The Trappers will then welcome in Western Wyoming (9-9) at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
