Northwest College updates major maintenance projects in near future

Posted

The new student center isn’t the only construction project either underway or planned at Northwest College over the next few years.

At Wednesday’s Northwest College board meeting, trustees reviewed and approved revisions and requests for major maintenance projects for the State Construction Department for fiscal years 2023-2025.

Revisions for the current year include an estimated $350,000 cost for car reader access, security cameras in certain buildings, a $1 million parking lot replacement for the Lewis and Clark and shop parking lot in FY2014, and another $1 million parking lot maintenance project at JFC East, North Cabre and Oliver/FAB yard.

NWC President Lisa Watson said security upgrades have been a priority, to the point where they’ve stopped waiting on state funding and are instead pulling the funds from major maintenance.

“For years we've talked about our desire to do some work in the area of security enhancements for the campus, and we've asked for several years for funds for the community colleges to up their security and have not received those funds. And so instead of looking for legislative support, we've gone back to major maintenance which we can do. It's just been a priority.”

Some security work has already been done, Watson said, such as upgrading doors during the pandemic.
