Northwest College rodeo finish fourth

Hosting the first rodeo of the season in the Big Sky Region, the Northwest College rodeo team had one high placing duo as the Trappers finished fourth in the team standings on Friday and Saturday.

“The rodeo went really well both days. Good weather, great crowds, no hiccups or nothing,” coach Del Nose said.

Leading the way for Northwest was the header/heeler duo of Chance Marshall and Ty Grant.

They placed second overall, with Nose hopeful they will have a good year.

“They’ve got a shot at (making) the college finals, they really do,” Nose said. “I’m really excited about them, they’ve been a good positive.”

He said he is hopeful they can keep the momentum going throughout the fall so they have a good position heading into the spring to try making the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper next June.

Despite that being the only score for the Trappers in the team standings, Nose was happy with the results as Northwest ended with 230 points to take fourth.

“First time in a long time we didn’t get skunked,” Nose said. “We ended up fourth and I was excited about that too.”

The Trapper men were not far behind those in second and third place, as newcomer to the region Dickinson State University was second with 465 points and University of Montana-Western was third with 370.

Montana State University ran away with the team title with 1,125 points.

While the women’s team didn’t get on the board this week, Nose said they are right there in terms of making it to the night performances with some tweaks needed to get there.

“The girls are working hard at it, they just need to shave off a little bit and things will change for them. Got some good horses they can ride pretty well,” Nose said. “The girls are gonna get it. They practice and work hard for it.”

Overall for the first weekend, Nose felt the Trappers had a good start, and he's looking forward to the second weekend of action in Glendive, Montana, as they compete at Dawson Community College on Friday and Saturday.

“Everyone is stepping up and taking it seriously,” Nose said. “I’m really looking forward to those guys and girls thriving at Glendive.”
