Northwest adds Utah state champ as wrestling signee

The network of former Trapper wrestlers is paying dividends again in the signing of a Utah state champion to wrestle at Northwest College in the fall of 2020.

Gus Harrison of Uinta High School in Vernal, Utah, has accepted a scholarship to join Jim Zeigler’s wrestling program.

Harrison will compete in the 141- or 149-pound division for the Trappers in the fall, Zeigler said. Harrison won the 138-pound Utah state championship this season.  He was a three-time placewinner in the Utah state wrestling tournament.

Harrison is a crowd pleaser with his unorthodox style, Zeigler said.

“He’s kind of a funky wrestler, but he’s a winner,” the coach said. “He’ll be behind in matches, and just when you think he’s out of it, he comes back and wins his match. He’s a pinner, and he beats very good wrestlers. It’s fun.”

Zeigler said Harrison will need to work on his fundamentals in the collegiate ranks.

“He’s not always going to react the way you think he should; he’s just a winner. He’s an extremely hard worker, and he is only going to get better and better,” Zeigler predicted.

Trevor Murray — a two-time All American for Zeigler’s Trappers in 2001-02 — is an assistant coach at Harrison’s Uinta High School. Murray finished seventh in the national tournament in 2001 and third in 2002. Murray went on to be a starter for the University of Wyoming wrestling team.
