Norma Lavonne Hawley

Norma Lavonne Hawley was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Wagner, S.D., the daughter of Dave and Ida (Whetham) Harrington. She died at her home in Powell on Feb. 8, 2010, at the age of 78.

She attended Wagner public schools, and married Darold R. Hawley on Aug. 20, 1950, in Wagner. They had five children: Derla, DeNiel, Dianne, Douglas and Dawn. She and Darold owned and operated a restaurant/bowling alley in South Dakota before retiring and moving to Powell in 1995.

Norma was a member of the Methodist Church. She will be remembered for her love of the Lord, her calming demeanor and her love of family. She was an accomplished cook and baker, she shared many hours with family and friends, and she enjoyed playing cards and games. Norma loved to dance and bowl.

Norma was awarded the highest honorary award from the USA Freedom Corp. for her volunteer work and service as a senior companion.

The impact Norma had on her daughters, son and their families is immeasurable.

Norma is survived by her husband, Darold; daughters Derla McIntosh (Dane) of Powell, DeNiel Irwin (John) of Phoenix, Ariz., Dianne Fox of Rapid City, S.D., and Dawn Harbison (Jack) of Gillette; son Douglas Hawley (Kathy) of Littleton, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers Gerald “Tub” Harrington (Pat) of Wagner and Harold Harrington (Lou) of Indiana; sister-in-law Sharon Harrington of Delmont, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Dusty, Donald and Gene; and her sister, Dee.

A viewing will be on Friday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, with funeral services on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m. at the Methodist Church. Final services and burial will be in Wagner in June.
