Nine qualify for state in opening meet

Posted

Powell High School’s swimmers returned to the pool Saturday, competing in the Bruce Gresly Pentathlon in Lander. Though team scores weren’t kept at the event, the Powell girls saw several excellent performances, personal bests and state-qualifying times.

The only official times were for those who competed in all five swimming events: the 100 fly, 100 back, 50 free, 100 breast and 100 free. Emma Mitchell was Powell’s top finisher, taking sixth place overall with a total time of 5:05.25. In diving, Taycee Walker won the 1-meter 11 dives, while Kami Jensen won the 1-meter six dives, both qualifying for state.

Others who swam all five events were Kik Hayano (12th), Sydney Legler (19th), Dakota Hansen (23rd), Baylee Brence (33rd), Charlee Brence (38th), Colette Sanders (42nd) and Kathryn Brence (48th).

Overall, the Panthers had nine athletes achieve 14 state-qualifying marks. Those swimmers and divers were Mitchell (100 fly, 100 back, 50 free, 100 breast, 100 free), Hayano (100 fly, 100 free), Walker (diving), Jensen (diving), Charlee Brence (100 fly), Sydney Legler (100 fly), Grace Sapp (100 back), Kathryn Brence (100 breast) and Gabby Paterson (100 fly).

In total, the Panthers recorded 36 personal-best times at the meet. Athletes who made “mega” jumps according to head coach Bob Smartt were Sanders, Hansen, Charlee Brence, Cassidy Reimer and Kate Miller.

Overall, the coach thought the opening pentathlon gave him a glimpse of where his team currently stands.

“The Lander Pentathlon is a good first meet as it encourages athletes to swim all four strokes, giving the coaches an early look at individual athlete strengths and weaknesses,” Smartt said.

The Panthers return to the water Friday, swimming and diving in a varsity invitational in Cody before competing in Riverton on Saturday.
