The Powell Middle School boys’ track and field teams earned strong results from two meets in three days, as the seventh and eighth graders put on good performances in Laurel and Shoshoni.
LAUREL INVITE
Starting at the Laurel Invite on Thursday the seventh grade Cubs got a pair of individual winners.
Tucker McDonald won the pole vault by clearing 7 feet, 6 inches, and tied for the win in high jump alongside Carter Gambill as both cleared 4-0.
Powell also got one other top three finish from Gambill in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.32 seconds, as Ryder DeBoer was the other Cub to get a top five finish, taking fifth in long jump with a leap of 14-3.
The eighth grade Cubs were unable to get an individual winner in Laurel, but had a number of top five finishes as Harper Havron took third in the 200 meters (25.87); Russell Goolsbey took fourth in the triple jump (34-2 1/4) and Isaiah Torres took fifth in the long jump (15-11).
“It was a great opportunity for both the boys and girls to get fresh competition against the Montana teams,” coach Amanda Haney said. “Going against new teams outside their usual circuit helps push them in new ways — different styles, new matchups and tougher challenges. Plus, it’s just fun to test yourself against unfamiliar opponents.”
SHOSHONI INVITE
After the Laurel Invite the Cubs made the trip down to Shoshoni on Saturday, as the meet combined seventh and eighth graders together in one competition where the Cubs performed well despite missing some key competitors.
Powell got one individual winner, as Tristen Snell won the discus with a throw of 129-4.
The Cubs also got a second place finish from Karzten Carter in the high jump clearing 5-4, as Carter also finished third in the 200 meter hurdles (30.7) and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.98).
Torres was the other Cub to finish in the top five as he took third in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:24.75.
“The boys showed impressive resilience in Shoshoni, proving they can hold their own even without a full lineup,” Haney said. “They made the most of every opportunity, with athletes stepping into multiple roles and still finding ways to contribute. It highlighted their depth, determination and willingness to battle through less than ideal circumstances. Even short-handed, they showed they’re a team that’s tough to count out.”
As a combined team the Cubs placed third with 50 points in a crowded field behind champion Worland which ran away with the team title.
Haney said that results throughout the season have been difficult to obtain, resulting in incomplete or inaccurate results at times as the Cubs try and find ways to improve their times and marks each week.
The Cubs will now have the rest of this week and next week to prepare for their home meet, which will be hosted at Powell High School on Saturday, April 26.
