Event attracts more than 100 this year
It’s too early to say how much money the event raised, but based on the number of participants, the 22nd annual Sugar Beet Classic was a huge success. Expanded to a triathlon this year due to the proximity of the Powell Aquatic Center, the event was won by Ladell Merritt on the men’s side and Jeanna Merritt on the women’s side.
“We had 120 registered participants,” said Powell Medical Foundation executive director Diane DeLozier. “We were excited to add the triathlon and we had a good turnout for the event. It was a beautiful day for a race and we had a great event.”
By contrast, last summer’s Sugar Beet Classic drew 64 registered entrants.
No estimates were available for the amount of money raised. The Sugar Beet Classic is the start of a week-long event. The Powell Medical Foundation’s Heartland Golf Classic takes place this Saturday at the Powell Golf Club.
Registration for the tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. at the course. A shotgun start at 9 a.m. will get the competition started.
