Memorial Day Tournament goes to Long, Day

The weather cooperated for the fourth tournament of the season at the Powell Golf Club, as the two-day, Memorial Day Tournament was played Sunday and Monday.

“The weather was one of the best weekends we’ve had,” PGA Pro Chris Jones said. “And, in fact, we had four more teams than we did for this tournament last year.”

Play was divided up into three flights, and the two days of play saw two different formats.

The two-person teams played Best Ball on the first day, where each player plays his own ball, with the best score on the hole being the one recorded.

Jerry Herweyer and Dick Fisher brought in a 64 in the Ranger Flight after the first day, Larry Hedderman and Lee Tresler had a 63 in the Airborne Flight and Jessi Herweyer teamed with Paul Carrasco to card a 57 in the Seal Flight.

But the second day’s format — Chapman — wreaked some serious havoc with the scores.

Chapman has both players hit their tee shot, with each next hitting the other’s ball.

The best lie of the two is chosen at that point, with players alternately hitting the ball until it is holed.

Three contending teams saw their scores go down the second day, while the others all went up, some by as many as 11 shots.

After the dust had settled, Doug Long and Pat Day brought in a remarkable 59 on Monday, far outdoing their 71 on Sunday, to win the Ranger Flight with a 130 total.

Mike Bohlman and Greg Toland went 68 and 64 to finish in second at 132 and Jerry Herweyer and Dick Fisher were third by going 64-70 for a 134.

Larry Hedderman and Lee Tresler saw their Sunday score of 63 go up by eight with Monday’s 71 to come in at 134 in the Airborne Flight, while Shawn Warner and Tracy Copenhaver saw a four-stroke slide going from 65 Sunday to 69 Monday, to forge a tie at the top of the flight.

Adam Aviles and Nate Soderberg saw an improvement on the second day, carding a 66 Monday after a 71 Sunday, to card a 137 for third.

That blistering 57 by Herweyer and Carrasco to set Sunday’s pace in the Seal Flight almost slipped away with Monday’s 68, but was still enough to keep them in first for the flight at 125.

Carding a 128, going 60 and 68, were Karen Holcombe and Cameron Frates for second place, while there was a tie for third.

Bill Hendricks and Gary Ladd went 62 and 71 for a 133, with Marc Saylor and Howard Whitlock putting up a 66 and 67 to get to their 133.
