Meeteetse honored the American cowboy and the ranching heritage of the area July 18 during the 21st annual National Day of the American Cowboy.
Celebrations kicked off at 1 p.m. Saturday with the ranch rodeo held at the Meeteetse Rodeo Grounds, followed by a free dinner and dance hosted at the Oasis Motel and RV Park from 5-10 p.m. Auction items, a cornhole tournament and a bouncehouse for children were all included alongside the event and contributed to a healthy turnout of both local residents and visitors alike.
Live music provided courtesy of local artist Justine May and Cody-based bands Northfork Highway and Aubrey Slackey fueled the festivities well into the night. The Meeteetse Visitor Center hosted the event with the pulled-pork dinner provided by the Meeteetse Meat Company and libations supplied by the Elkhorn Bar.
Despite the bulk of celebrations taking place on Saturday, Meeteetse Museums is offering a guided excursion to the historic Double Dee Ranch on July 25 in observance of the holiday. Participants will have the chance to caravan out to the dude ranch, located deep in the Shoshone National Forest, and learn about the site’s history.
