The ownership of a Powell liquor license has changed from a Utah corporation to an Iowa company. Kind of.
At a Tuesday meeting, the Powell City Council agreed to transfer the Maverik convenience store’s retail liquor license from Maverik, Inc., to Maverik Group, LLC.
In materials submitted to the city, Maverik leaders indicated it’s the same group of gas stations and c-stores, just operating under a different entity.
“Basically, they’re changing their name,” said Mayor John Wetzel.
Public documents show the switch can be traced back to one of Maverik’s recent acquisitions.
Up until February, the Iowa-based Maverik Group, LLC was known as “Kum & Go, LLC” — the company that operated several hundred Kum & Go stations across the Midwest and in parts of Wyoming. However, Maverik bought the chain in 2023, rebranded the Kum & Gos as Maveriks and renamed the company.
Then in early June, Maverik leaders decided to effectively fold the Utah-based Maverik Inc. into the rechristened Maverik Group, LLC via a merger.
Known as “Adventure’s First Stop,” the multi-billion dollar chain has come a long way from its beginnings as a two-pump gas station in Afton in 1928. Today, Maverik operates 830 stores and employs 16,000 people across 20 states in the Midwest and West; its Powell location, which opened two decades ago, is officially known as store #346.
In a filing with the City of Powell, Maverik Group, LLC indicated it intends to continue operating and selling alcohol 24 hours a day on East Coulter Avenue.
