Funeral services for long-time Basin resident Mary L. Hubbell, 99, will be conducted today (Tuesday) at 10 a.m. at the Mount View Cemetery in Basin. She died Friday morning, June 10 at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin.
The Rev. Jack Preston will officiate at services, with military rites performed by the American Legion.
She was born in Basin Sept. 13, 1905, the daughter of Myrtle Barrett and Roy White. She received her schooling in Basin, graduating in 1924.
She worked and traveled until she joined the U.S. Army as a WAC. She served on active duty for three years and seven months and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. She served in the Army Reserves until her retirement in 1957.
She went to beauty school and opened Mary’s Beauty Shop in Basin in 1950, operating it until 1971.
Gardening was a favorite avocation, and she shared produce of her vegetable garden with many. She also made and gave away quilts and lap robes. Mary did the carpentry work in her home.
In 1994, she entered the Wyoming Retirement Center. Her independent spirit, fierce pride and determination kept her going despite poor health.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert (Kay) Cummings of Great Falls, Mont., and Guy (Bessie) Cummings of Powell; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lee (Ellen) Cummings of Basin and Mrs. Jim (Dixie) Cummings of Greybull; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Alberta and Ruth, and two brothers, Lee and Jim.
