Several Powell school buildings were temporarily placed on lockdown Friday, according to Park County School District No. 1 Superintendent Kevin Mitchell.
The Powell Police Department notified the school district at around 11:15 a.m. about an incident involving an upset parent. The lockdown was lifted around 2:15 p.m.
The Support Services Building (SSB) was the first building to go into lockdown status, followed by the district administration office, Powell Middle School, Parkside Elementary School and the Shoshone Learning Center, due to their proximity to the Support Services Building.
“All other schools and buildings were placed on alert status,” Mitchell said.
The school district also notified the Children’s Resource Center, which is located across the street from the Support Services Building (the old PHS building).
During a lockdown, no one is allowed to enter or leave the building. Otherwise, it was business as usual in the buildings.
“People weren’t locked in classrooms,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said there was a lot of good communication between law enforcement and school officials.
“The incident was taken care of without any safety issues across the district,” Mitchell wrote in a message to parents. “The Powell Police Department was in constant contact with the superintendent and took care of the situation very professionally.”
