Law enforcement officers and dispatchers from across the Big Horn Basin gathered at the Cody Walmart on Tuesday to help host a Christmas shopping spree for families in need.
As part of the annual “Shop with a Cop” event, officers were paired with a child in need from their respective communities, with the youth receiving a holiday shopping spree for themselves or their families, the Park County Sheriff’s Office explained in a Facebook post; Walmart associates assisted the shoppers.
Once the shopping was done, the officers and kids met at the Cody Auditorium for a pizza party and gift wrapping session.
A wide range of departments participated, including the Park County Sheriff’s Office, Powell Police Department, Wyoming Highway Patrol, Cody Police Department, Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office, Lovell Police Department and Yellowstone National Park.
Sheriff Scott Steward said the program is a great way for law enforcement to give back to the community.
“This is not only a wonderful way to spread some Christmas cheer for the children, but it’s a win-win for the officers as well,” said Steward. “They get to have some fun and at the same time demonstrate to the children that police officers really are their friends.”
The event was coordinated by the Wyoming Highway Patrol and made possible by donations from Walmart, Cody Seamless Siding, Cody Coffee Roaster, Lovell Building Center, Papa Murphy’s in Cody and the Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper’s Association.
