Late summer programs at Bighorn Canyon

The Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area still has a number of events to offer for the rest of the summer. Some of the events to be enjoyed on the South District of the park near Lovell include:

 

Ranch Tours

Aug. 2 — Join VIP Mike Bridgeman and VIP Steve Kinney for Tours of the Lockhart Ranch. Tours will start at 11 a.m. and go until 3 p.m. depending on the weather.  

 

Ranger Programs

Aug. 2 — Join MSU Intern Emily Clark on a guided walk at Sullivan’s Knob trail. Walk will start at 9 a.m.  Learn more about the wildlife, birds and plants along the trail. 

Aug. 16 — Join Ranger Christy Fleming and the University of Wyoming Extension office for a Wyoming Walks tour of Hillsboro. Meet at the Lovell Visitor Center at 8 a.m. and Car Caravan to Hillsboro.  

Aug. 30 — Join Ranger Christy Fleming and the Lovell Kane Area Museum for a historic place and people of Bighorn Canyon bus tour.  Tickets for the bus tour can be purchased through the Lovell Kane Area Museum.

 

Geology 

Look for pop-up geology programs at Devil Canyon by VIP geologist Greg Jones throughout the summer.

Aug. 1 — Join VIP Greg Jones at 10 a.m. at Barry’s Landing to explore the fossil wall.

Aug. 8 — Join VIP Greg Jones at 9 a.m. at Horseshoe Bend for a stroll through geologic time. 

Aug. 15 — Join VIP Greg Jones at 4 p.m. at Devil Canyon Overlook to learn about the faults and bends that shaped Bighorn Canyon.

Aug. 22 — Join VIP Greg Jones in the Lovell Visitor Center between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to play the Fossil Match Game. 

 

Artist In Residence

Visitors are once again able to enjoy AIR Mike Hansen’s outdoor collection in the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center. The painting exhibit will remain in the gallery through the summer.    

When attending programs people are advised to have plenty of water, sunscreen, proper shoes and weather appropriate clothing. For more information, call the Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center at 307-548-5406.
