The Powell High School volleyball team logged some serious bus time last weekend, going 0-2 on the road against conference foes Lander and Worland. They rebounded to beat Lovell on Tuesday, 25-13, 26-24, 25-21.

Against the Lady Tigers on Friday, the Panthers lost in straight sets but kept it close throughout, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20.

“We came out ready to play against Lander, and the girls stuck with them the whole time,” said PHS head coach Tasha Miller. “I was proud of how hard they fought in that match — Lander has two of the best hitters in the region and we were able to shut them down and compete. We didn’t win the match, but I was proud of how well they did.”

Powell had a tougher go of it Saturday, with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-10 loss to Worland

“I was hoping we would go into Worland with that same intensity [as the Lander game], but we fell short and didn’t fight as hard to win,” Miller said. “The third set we just couldn’t get anything to work for us, unfortunately.”

Despite the losses, Miller said she’s continually impressed by the energy the Lady Panthers bring to each match, as well as their positivity in the face of adversity.

“I was really proud of how they kept their intensity and energy throughout every set, even when we started slipping in points,” she said. “That’s been a big struggle for us, so we made it a goal and they really pulled through. We still need to work in areas of our mental game and getting our intensity up, but we are definitely improving. I think the morale is good, they are learning and growing with every game and trying harder to continue to improve.”

Senior middle hitter Gabby Harshman had a solid weekend, finishing with 15 kills. Kady Wells added six kills, while Rose Graft and Paije Johnson each finished with five.

“Gabby Harshman had a great weekend, she was on fire for us,” Miller said.

Libero Michele Wagner led the team in digs with 42, followed by Gabi Metzler with 20. Metzler led in assists with 17, while Madi Fields finished with 10.

Wells finished the weekend with three aces, while Sabrina Shoopman added two.

Following Tuesday’s win over Lovell — for which stats were not available at press time — the Lady Panthers will host cross-county rival Cody tonight (Thursday) at Panther Gym. The team will then travel to Red Lodge, Montana, for a match on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
