Lady Panther swimmers splash past Worland Warriors

The Powell Lady Panthers celebrated their last dual meet of the season by swimming past Worland, 111-73, Tuesday.The meet produced two new qualifying times for the Lady Panthers. Brittany Christensen swam the 500-yard freestyle in just over 6:30 to earn a spot at state in that event, and Courtenay Zorgati swam a 2:43.47 to qualify in the individual medley while finishing second in the event.

Other notable times in the meet, according to coach Luke Robertson, were set by Anya Tracy, who cut three seconds from her best in the butterfly, and Paige Driver, who improved by nearly four seconds in the 50 freestyle.

Seniors Samantha Baker and Jessica Curtis continued their season-long personal dual, this time in the 200 freestyle. Baker took the top spot this time, touching a little over a half second ahead of her teammate as the pair finished one-two in the event.

Baker earned another first place in the backstroke, joining Maddy Jones in the individual medley, Anya Tracy in the butterfly, Courtenay Zorgati in the breaststroke, and Christensen in the 500 as first-place winners in the meet.

In the 200, Belen Quillen and Jessica Wurzel finished fourth and fifth behind Smantha Baker and Curtis, giving the Lady Panthers four of the top five spots in the event. Kourtnie Rodgers and Curtis finished second and third behind Courtenay Zorgati to sweep the top three slots in the breaststroke.

Other team points for the Lady Panthers came on second places by Alice Pinter in the 50 freestyle and Monique Zorgati in the 100 freestyle, Diver Stepfanie Thompson scored 160 on her dives, but was edged out for first by 1.5 points.

Pinter earned third place in the butterfly, as did Alyssa Smith in the backstroke, Monique Zorgati in the 50 freestyle and diver Emily Newlin. Fourth place finishers were Diver Molly McCray, Smith in the 100 freestyle and Lori Hetzel in the 500 freestyle. Sierra Baker finished fifth in the 50 freestyle and the butterfly, and Tracy finished fifth in the backstroke.

In relay competition, Powell teams finished second and third in the individual medley, first and second in the 200 freestyle and second and third in the 400.

This weekend, the Lady Panthers will compete in the Lander Invitational, going up against several of the fastest swimmers in the state in their final competition prior to the conference meet.

Saturday's meet begins at 11 a.m.
