Seventh-graders take second at Worland meet

Six teams gathered in Worland on Saturday for the Middle School Conference Track and Field Meet, with Powell’s eighth-grade girls coming away with the conference championship and the seventh-graders finishing second in the field that included Cody, Lovell, Thermopolis, Greybull and host Worland.

“Between the two teams, the girls had 41 personal records for the day,” assistant coach Dale Ann Meeker said.

One of those records led Kady Wells to a win in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:05.07, and another came from the 4x200 relay team of Heather Wittick, Sabrina Shoopman, Gabi Metzler and Wells to come in at 1:59.91 for the win.

Shoopman picked up another win for the Lady Cubs in the 200-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 31.97 seconds, and Natalie Dillivan, Hailee Paul, Sidney O’Brien and Kaitlyn Decker teamed up to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:45.56.

Shoopman and Wittick both set personal bests in the 100 hurdles, both coming across in 17.04 seconds to earn a tie for second in the event, with the Cubbies getting six more second-place finishes, five of those with personal records.

Dillivan went 30 feet, 9.75 inches in the triple jump, Samantha Herchkorn cleared 4 feet, 5 inches in the high jump and Marie Ramier launched the discus 78 feet.

Wittick, Gabby Harshman, Metzler and Herchkorn did the 4x100 relay in 58.12 seconds, Wells finished the 200-meter dash in 28.28 seconds and Dillivan didn’t set her personal mark, but took second in the 400 in 1:07.55.

Three more Powell girls earned third-place finishes in four events, all setting personal bests.

Dillivan crossed the line in the 200 in 29.21, O’Brien did the 800 in 2:44.77 and triple jumped 29 feet, 11.25 inches and Ramier heaved the shot put 25 feet, 2 inches.

Wittick and Shoopman got fourth-places in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, respectively, with Metzler getting fourth in the 200 hurdles with a personal best time of 35.34 seconds.

Decker finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 12 feet, 8 inches and Hannah Saville had a personal best discus throw of 69 feet, 1.5 inches to also place fourth.

Adding key points by finishing fifth were Decker in the 1600, O’Brien in the 100 hurdles and Bella Wambeke in the shot put, while Metzler took sixth in the 400 and McKenzie Clarkson went sixth in the shot put.

Plenty of new standards were set by the seventh-grade Cubs in their strong effort on the day.

Bryten Checketts set her new mark of 32.93 seconds in the 200 hurdles to pick up a win and Jala Satterwhite, Checketts, Mattie Larsen and Emma Karhu set a new mark of 2:02.91 and won the 4x200 relay.

And though she didn’t have a personal record, Hailee Hyde’s high jump of 4 feet, 4 inches got her the top mark in the event.

Karhu had a pair of second-place finishes, one in the 400 with a time of 1:07.80 and the other in the pole vault by clearing 7 feet, 6 inches and Checketts set a new personal standard with a 2:39.23 to finish second in the 800.

New records were set in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, leading to second-place finishes.

Maddie Hackenberg, Madison Fields, Elsie Spomer and Raelynn Ramsey ran the 4x100 in 59.32 seconds and Hyde, Jozi Simpson, Ramsey and Jenna Merritt finished the 4x400 in 5:07.53.

Checketts earned third in the 400 with a time of 1:08.10, Larsen placed third in the high jump at 4 feet, 2 inches, Hackenberg cleared 7 feet in the pole vault for third and Satterwhite went 12 feet, 8.75 inches to get third in the long jump.

Spomer hit her personal best distance of 28 feet, 3.76 inches to get third in the triple jump, while Crystal Emmett threw a personal record 23 feet, 5 inches for third in the shot put.

There were five, fourth-place finishes, with four personal bests set, the exception being Karhu running the 200 hurdles in 33.83.

Setting bests while taking fourth were Merritt in the 800 (2:53.81), Tegan Lovelady in the 100 hurdles (19.20), Merritt in the long jump (12 feet, 8.25 inches) and Mia Baxter in the discus (68 feet, 5.5 inches).

Fifth-place finishes were had by Merritt in the 1600 (personal best 6:21.98), Satterwhite in the 200 hurdles (PB 33.99), and Hyde in the triple jump (PB 27 feet, 10 inches).

“On behalf of all of our coaches, Amanda Johnston, Darwin Rowton, Zach Coombs, Zac Opps, Dan Hunter and Phoebe Cox, we are very proud of all the girls and their efforts,” Meeker said.

The coaches and their Lady Cubs finish out their season today (Tuesday) as they travel to Lander for the Best of the Best meet.
