Kath named vice president of Wyoming bar

Posted

Powell attorney Scott Kath has been elected as vice president of the Wyoming State Bar.

The results of the 2020-21 election were announced last week during the Bar’s Virtual Annual Business Meeting.

A partner at the firm Copenhaver, Kath, Kitchen & Kolpitcke, Kath has been a Wyoming resident since 1975, when he moved to Jackson to manage a retail store. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wyoming in 1981, followed by a juris doctor degree from the UW College of Law in 1983.

Kath moved to Powell in January 1984 to join the Copenhaver Law Office and became a partner in 1986. Kath served as an assistant public defender from 1984 through January 2020. He continues to serve as the deputy City of Powell attorney and as a hearing examiner for the State of Wyoming Office of Administrative Hearings — roles he’s held since 1989 and 2006, respectively.

Kath has also been actively involved in the legal profession and in the community, serving in leadership positions with the Park County Bar Association, Wyoming State Bar Foundation, Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Park County, the Park County Mental Health Board and the Northwest Wyoming Family Planning Board.

As vice president, Kath will serve as a member-at-large of the Board of Commissioners and a member of the executive committee.

Kath is the outgoing Wyoming State Bar commissioner for the Fifth Judicial District, which covers the Big Horn Basin.

He’s being replaced in that role by attorney Jennifer Kirk. A Basin native, Kirk is a deputy county and prosecuting attorney for Big Horn County.

She earned a bachelor’s in marketing from the University of Wyoming in 2006, then obtained a juris doctor degree from the UW College of Law in 2014.

Kirk spent a year with Legal Aid of Wyoming in Cheyenne and then four years opening and growing an office for the Wyoming Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in Cody. Her family relocated back to Basin in September 2019.
