The Powell High School junior varsity girls are 12-0 after three more home wins — two of them close — and one win on the road the last couple weeks. On Jan. 23-24 at home the Panthers defeated Cody 34-31 and Worland 38-32, before another pair of wins over Lovell 48-30 at home and Buffalo 58-34 on the road.

Against Cody the Panther girls jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter.

The game tightened in the second quarter, as the Panthers only scored two points, but held Cody to five as the Panthers led 16-9 heading into the half.

In the third quarter Cody quickly cut the gap down to two, with neither team leading by more than three points the remainder of the game.

Ava Teten hit a big three for the Panthers in the third quarter to give them a 25-22 lead heading into the fourth.

Cody made a strong push in the fourth quarter, claiming the lead up 31-29 with 2:30 left.

Veronica Kovach came up with a big steal and layup to tie the game, before Kindyle Floy gave the Panthers the lead for good to earn the 34-31 victory.

Teten led with nine points, Kovach had six, Floy added five, Leah Graham and Kaedenze Carter each added four, Shelby Zickefoose had three while Hali Hancock had two and Autumn Kidd added one.

“The girls did a great job of stepping up to the much higher level of competition that Cody brought and scratching out a very good win to get us to 9-0,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.

On Jan. 24 the Panthers took on Worland, building another quick lead up 14-6 after the first.

Another strong quarter in the second capped off by a Carter buzzer-beating 3-pointer made it a 28-15 scoreline at halftime.

In the second half, Worland mixed its defenses and flustered the Panther offense, cutting the lead down to five multiple times.

Panther Maddie Valdez hit a key 3-pointer in the third quarter, as the Panthers held onto the ball most of the second half to keep Worland at bay.

Down the stretch the Panthers held the Warriors scoreless despite going 1-6 at the free throw line to end with a 38-32 win.

Teten and Floy led with eight points each, Carter had seven, Kovach had six, Valdez had three and Greaham, Hancock and Zickefoose each had two.

In the second set of games the Panthers got off to a strong start against Lovell at home, building a 16-6 lead after the first quarter.

The Panthers expanded their lead and held a 24-12 advantage at the break, and didn’t allow Lovell to get closer than nine the rest of the game to finish with a 48-30 win.

Kovach had 11 points alongside Carter for the team lead.

Teten added nine, Hancock and Floy each had five while Kidd had four and Graham had three to round out the scoring.

In Buffalo the Panthers again jumped out to a quick advantage, leading 16-7 after the first quarter and 26-12 at halftime.

Buffalo outscored the Panthers in the third and cut the lead slightly to 35-22, before a strong fourth quarter helped Powell pull away for a 58-34 win.

Freshmen Jesi Agee and Sam Edgell made their debuts for the team in Buffalo, as Agee led in scoring with 14, including 12 in the final quarter.

“They both stepped right in and took advantage of their opportunities,” Hildebrand said.

Teten and Floy each had 10 points, Graham and Kovach had six, Carter had three, Hancock had two and Edgell had one.

The Panthers head on the road to Lyman and Mountain View this weekend.
