JV girls enjoy successful 2023 season

The Powell High School girls’ junior varsity basketball team wrapped up its season in February, ending a strong season with a 14-6 record.

Starting out the season the Panthers held a 2-2 record after the first four games of the year, but went on a seven game win streak to help build a 9-3 record just past the midway point of the season.

Powell was led by two strong juniors in Lauryn Bennett and Kenzie Fields, who helped the team early in the season find its groove.

“They really helped us come together and gel early in the season thanks to their experience,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.

Powell bounced back and forth with wins and losses over a difficult stretch before ending the year with two wins, including a dominant 64-29 victory over Thermopolis in the season finale.

“The girls saved their best performance of the season for their final game which was great to see,” Hildebrand said.

Throughout the season the Panthers were led by several different scorers on the team, something Hildebrand said he was excited to see as the team finished with seven different leading scorers over the 20-game season.

“That speaks to the diversity of this group and how well they shared the ball,” Hildebrand said. “This team ran the floor and passed the ball as well as any group I have had at the JV level.”

Outside of the two returning juniors, the Panthers had youth step up in key roles throughout the year.

Sophomores on the team who came in and contributed were Alexa Richardson,  Saige Kidd and Caitlynn Floy, who all helped the Panthers succeed this season.

A large mix of freshmen contributed to the junior varsity squad this year, led by Coy Erickson who helped provide strong perimeter shooting, while Ivy Agee embraced her role as the primary, on-ball defender. Shelby Zickefoose also played a key role alongside Neveah Garcia who moved up to the JV team in February to gain experience late in the season.

The final Panther on the JV team was exchange student KoKo Baba, who Hildebrand said provided the team with an extra shooter and a tremendous passer.

“This team did an excellent job of showing up each game and giving the best they had,” Hildebrand said. “They were an excellent group to work with and their 14-6 season was a nice accomplishment for them.”
