The Powell Panther girls’ junior varsity squad fell for the first time this season, losing to the Burlington varsity 70-48 on Feb. 18 before rebounding against Lander 59-9 and Pinedale 48-29 on Feb. 21-22.
The Panthers took a majority of their junior varsity team on the road to Burlington, but were missing some key players due to make-up games at the varsity level in Lyman and Mountain View.
“Burlington had lost four conference games this season due to other 1A Northwest teams not being able to field a team,” coach Troy Hildebrand said. “They have worked to fill their schedule with some JV teams like Sheridan, Cody and us. We had hoped to be able to play them with our regular JV team but due to the Lyman/Mountain View rescheduling with our varsity we had a few JV players on that trip with us.”
Burlington took advantage of its better size and speed, building a 40-24 halftime lead.
The Panthers pulled back within 12 in the third quarter but the experienced Huskies pulled away for the 70-48 win.
Kindyle Floy led the Panthers with 14, Veronica Kovach had 11, Kaedenze Carter had seven, Autumn Kidd had six, Hali Hancock had four and Jesi Agee, Shelby Zickefoose and Sam Edgell each had two.
Returning home on Friday the Panthers welcomed in a depleted Lander team, and quickly put away the Tigers.
The Panthers held a 25-2 lead after the first quarter, and the Panthers routed the visitors with a 59-9 win allowing for plenty of playing time.
Carter led with 16 points, Kovach had 12, Edgell had eight, Floy had seven, Maddie Valdez had five, Agee had four, Hancock had three and Zickefoose and Graham each tossed in two.
Wrapping up the home schedule the Panthers matched up with the Wranglers, starting fast once again with a 13-5 lead after the first.
Powell held a 28-15 lead at the half, but a low scoring third quarter saw Pinedale cut the advantage to 31-20 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Panthers quickly put the game to rest in the fourth, and the Panthers finished with the 48-29 win.
Carter led with 12, Floy and Ava Teten each had seven, Kovach had six, Kidd, Graham and Zickefoose each had four while Agee and Valdez each had two.
Overall the Panthers have a 15-1 record but hold a 15-0 record against JV competition.
The season wraps up for the JV squad this week on the road against Lovell on Thursday and Cody on Friday.
