Juveniles alleged to have dealt $100,000 worth of damage to Ralston warehouse

Two juveniles vandalized an agricultural warehouse outside of Ralston earlier this month, causing roughly $100,000 worth of damage, the Park County Sheriff’s Office says.

The incident took place on Oct. 4 at a former Coors warehouse, located just off U.S. Highway 14-A, southwest of Ralston.

According to information later reported to the sheriff’s office by the juveniles and their parents, the two teens broke into the locked building, damaged and destroyed various items, then started a fire and left.

One of the youths later told their parent, who made sure the fire was out and contacted law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.

The responding deputy “observed multiple areas of graffiti with red spray paint on walls, grain bags, a forklift and a dump truck,” Charla Baugher-Torczon, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, wrote in a Thursday news release. “There was a large amount of spilled oil on the floor, multiple cut grain bags that had been dumped out, and an area where a fire had been started by the juveniles.”

The juveniles allegedly admitted to all the damage and to two previous acts of vandalism — including one incident that hadn’t been reported, the release said.

The total seed loss amount came to $93,645, with the clean-up estimated to cost $7,900, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The children took responsibility for their actions,” Baugher-Torczon wrote, “and the case has been turned over to the [Park] County Attorney for review.”

Authorities did not release the juveniles’ ages. If the youth are younger than 17, their cases will likely be handled in juvenile court, where the proceedings are confidential.

Questions seeking more details about the case from the sheriff’s office — including who operates the warehouse and what kind of seeds were damaged — were not immediately answered on Monday.
