John Henry Steigelman, 90, of Sheridan died on Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1922, to John Westley and Anna Junger Steigelman in Sheridan. At 10 days old his father met his mother and him coming by train from Sheridan to Clearmont, riding then by team and wagon to their home near Leiter in 22 below zero weather.

He attended school at Ucross and Buffalo and worked mostly at farming, ranching, herding sheep, cutting timber, WPA and boiler maker before being inducted into the 70th Division Artillery at Camp Adair, Ore. From there he wound up in the 96th Div. M.P.S. and then to Lyte and Okinawa. As a WWII veteran, he was very proud of his country and his service in the military.

John worked for Wyoming Game and Fish Department as a game wardenafor 27 years, traveling every dirt road and cow trail in Wyoming.

On March 1, 1972, John married his second wife, Goldie Ann Sayer Ackerley, in Big Horn. They ran a retirement home for the elderly at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains and celebrated 40 years of marriage.

John loved his garden and flowers. You could find him there, unless he was fishing or at a polka dance.

He was a member of the V.F.W., Big Horn Mountain Polka Club, Big Sky Polka Club and the Old Time Fiddler’s Club.

John was preceded in death by his parents; son, Russell John Steigelman and sister, Mary Steigelman Voiles.

He is survived by his wife, Goldie; and daughters, Karen Ann Steigelman Owen of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Rebeca Jean Steigelman Hart and Gail Lynn Steigelman Cooper of Sheridan; stepson, Billy Lee Ackerley; sister, Veronica Steigelman Panetta of Sheridan; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donations to honor John may be made to the Sheridan County Animal Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.
