Jackalope Jump returns to Powell March 27

The Powell area’s coolest fundraiser returns later this month, with the 12th annual Jackalope Jump slated for Friday, March 27.

The event — which involves participants leaping into a pool of icy water — serves as a fundraiser for Special Olympics Wyoming.

“[We] are hoping to recruit as many brave souls as possible to jump into the cold waters to support the athletes of Special Olympics,” said Powell Police Sgt. Matt Koritnik, who’s helping organize the jump.

Powell Middle School is again hosting this year’s event, with registration starting at noon and at the jumping beginning at 1 p.m. Participants are encouraged to register in advance and can do so online as individuals or as a team.

About 30 jumpers took the plunge last year and raised about $3,000, Koritnik said. This year’s goal, he said, is to raise $5,000 to help cover the annual costs that local Powell area athletes incur to participate in the summer, fall and winter games hosted by Special Olympics Wyoming. The nonprofit organization provides year-round sports training, athletic competition and related programs to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Powell is one of about a dozen communities hosting Jackalope Jumps this spring. Cody’s is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, at Cody City Park.

Anyone is welcome to watch and cheer on the jumpers. And those who don’t want to get wet and cold can still participate, as Special Olympics Wyoming offers a “too chicken to jump” donation option.
