Indoor track races into 2025

The halls of Powell schools and areas around Powell have served as practice grounds for the indoor track team since practices began at the start of January, with the Panthers ready for their first meet of the season this weekend in Gillette.

Early on in the workouts the Panthers have been getting their conditioning down while running the halls and streets of Powell.

That conditioning is getting the team ready to run around the 200 meter track the team will be accustomed to over the next two months, with six meets including state being held in Gillette.

“We are just getting to know a lot of these kids and see where their conditioning is at,” coach Scott Smith said.

The Panthers bring back a pair of distance medalists in Kinley and Karee Cooley from last year’s team along with a number of athletes who competed at the state meet last year.

This season Smith said the goal remains the same for the Panthers: Bring home as many medals as possible while not overworking the athletes before their respective spring sports.

“Get better each meet, bring home as much hardware as possible,” Smith said. “Watch closely to prevent overuse injuries and stay healthy both mentally and physically.”

Running through the pods at Powell High School has been a benefit for the Panthers, as Smith said they run those corners in order to prepare for the tight corners in Gillette. He feels the athletes are prepared for the first meet.

“We do a few workouts in the pods at the high school that really make the Gillette corners look huge. So far the kids have handled them well,” Smith said.

Heading to Gillette the Panthers will be preparing themselves to compete against all levels of competition, but will divert at the end of the season once again to take on solely 3A competition.

In a difference from last year’s state meet, the 3A competition will take place separately, with the 3A meet March 6-7 and the 4A meet March 7-8.

Heading into the first meet Smith said the main goals of the team are simple.

“The biggest goals for this meet is how to use the facility to get warmed up well, how to compete against great competition and to get to know their teammates and be supportive of each other,” Smith said.
