Sanders breaks triple jump record

Posted

The Powell Panther indoor track and field team took another trip over the hill and left with some strong times, as another school record fell on Friday in Gillette.

Sophomore Paige Sanders broke the old triple jump record, set by Anissa Warner in 2015, by 2.5 inches with a new leap of 34 feet, 5 inches, to finish fourth in the event.

“Paige’s record is really impressive when you think that she broke the record of a senior girl that competed at the Division I level,” coach Scott Smith said. “It’s going to be fun to watch her as she develops because she has a great work ethic and will continue to improve.”

The girls also had another pair of top four finishes, as Kinley Cooley placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 29.83 seconds, as well as a fourth place finish in the 1600 meters in 5:32.79.

The final points for the girls came in the 1600 sprint medley, where the quartet of Audrey Johnson and Sanders alongside Kinley and Karee Cooley with a time of 4:41.47.

Overall the girls finished 11th in a tie with Cody with 22 points, as they finished tied as the third best 3A team.

Thunder Basin won the girls’ title by over 17 points over second place with 107.66 points.

On the boys’ side the Panthers had one event in which they scored, as the 4x800 relay team of Troy Cheatham, Nathan Varian, Colin Walker and Korbyn Warren finished second with a time of 9:56.87.

Throughout the indoor season the Panthers continue to compete against both 3A and 4A schools, with Smith noting the Panthers are getting more used to the level of competition at each meet.

“The kids are still pretty nervous with the big stage with some getting used to it faster than others,” Smith said. “We are showing where they rank in 3A now, which really helps them put things into perspective.”

Overall the boys’ team finished 12th as a team with eight points, fourth among 3A teams. Sheridan was the top overall team with 89.5 points.

Powell once again heads to Gillette this weekend on Saturday, taking part in the Bronc Indoor Invitational.

Thanks to a meet in Casper, there will be less 4A competition in attendance which will allow the Panthers to measure up against most of the 3A schools along with the two Gillette schools and Sheridan.

“I hope to see more energy out of our kids with leaving later and the meet going faster,” Smith said. “There will still be great competition and I am hoping to see more confidence in the kids as they perform. We are still trying to gain conditioning, stay healthy and add more to our basic fundamental skills.”
