Two more school records dropped and the Powell Panther indoor track and field team brought home a host of medals after one final trip to Gillette for the 3A State Championships.
The Panthers tallied the two new school records in the distance races, as Kinley Cooley improved her 3200 meter record with a time of 11 minutes, 52.07 seconds, and the 4x800 relay team of Karee Cooley, Macie Velasco, Myah Rakness and Kinley Cooley finished in 10:28.44.
Kinley Cooley placed third in the 3200 meters and the 4x800 relay team was second.
“Records are meant to be broken,” coach Scott Smith said. “It’s always great to see great kids do great things.”
Beyond records the Panthers got top performances from Paige Sanders, who finished second in both the long jump and triple jump, going 15 feet, 11 inches in long jump, and 34-1 1/2 in the triple jump.
More top eight finishes for the Panther girls came from Audrey Johnson taking fifth in the 400 meters (1:04.59), Karee Cooley taking sixth in the 3200 meters (12:13.75), Anai Torres taking sixth in the shot put (31-6 3/4), Kinley Cooley taking eighth in the 400 meters (1:04.91) and Macie Velasco in the 1600 meters (5:56.18).
The Panther girls finished eighth with 49.5 points, as Cody ran away with the team race with 118.5 points.
For the boys, the top performance came from Lincoln Crawford, who placed fourth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.31.
“I was really impressed with the number of personal records we had on both the boys and girls sides, almost every kid we took had a PR,” Smith said. “We were loaded with young kids and they did a great job of competing well in the most important meet of the year.”
A couple of fifth place performances came from Liam Taylor in the 800 meters (2:04.98) and Korbyn Warren in the 3200 meters (11:00.32), while Warren also placed eighth in the 1600 meters (5:00.29).
The Panther boys came in 10th with 21 points, while the Cody boys also ran away with the team title with 154 points.
This was the third season in which the Panthers competed in indoor track, with Smith noting they are continuing to adjust and grow each year.
“Every season has been a learning experience with juggling facility schedules, keeping kids healthy, while challenging them with workouts and finding ways to improve technique,” he said.
With the conclusion of this season athletes will transition outdoors to their respective spring sports.
“This gives our kids a great jump on the season,” Smith said. “Had they not been participating with us, they may very well have been physically inactive, so it is a great leapfrog into the outdoor season.”
