In celebration of family

This last Sunday was Mother’s Day, and we celebrated our moms. This week more babies were born to families in our church, and others will soon be born. That is always a blessing. As a pastor it us always an honor to officiate weddings. As usual I will be officiating several this summer. I love the celebration and excitement that goes along with all these events. It shows us that no matter how marriage, family, the birth of children is maligned and attacked, it is still the central part of our lives. It is central because God created that way. It is a joy God has given to all mankind through his common grace.

Biblically speaking, there are two primary reasons for marriage. One is companionship. God said in the beginning, “It is not good that the man should be alone ...” (Genesis 2:18) The second is bringing children into the world. God also said to man and woman, “Be fruitful and multiply ...” (Genesis 1:28) This idea of marriage, children, family, moms and dads has been around from the “beginning.” It wasn’t a creation of man; it was a creation of God. And being a creation of God it is to be celebrated!

Proverbs 18:22 says, “He who finds a wife finds a good, and obtains favor from the Lord.” Psalm 127:3 declares, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” God celebrates marriage and family, we should celebrate marriage and family, the church should celebrate marriage and family. When you see your mom, when you see that newborn baby, when you attend a wedding, remember, it is a celebration of what God has created ... family.
