Hundreds of acres set to burn in Shoshone National Forest

Posted

The Shoshone National Forest is planning to implement several prescribed fire projects this fall as weather conditions allow. Up 390 acres may be burned.

Forest managers are planning to set controlled fires in the following areas:

  • Approximately 50 acres along Wyo. Highway 296 northeast of Dead Indian Campground. This treatment is intended to restore open grass and scrub communities while providing fuel breaks for private property and improvements.
  • Roughly 60 acres east of the Dead Indian overlook located off of Wyoming Highway 296. Managers hope to reduce conifer encroachment into meadows and break apart fuel continuity close to powerlines and communication infrastructure.
  • Up to 250 acres near the junction of Wyo. Highway 296 and U.S. Highway 212 are planned for treatment to provide fuel breaks near private property and improvements.
  • Up to 30 acres south of the Wood River road (NFSR 200) between the Middle Fork Wood River Trailhead and Brown Mountain Campground. Thie treatment is set to restore willow and riparian vegetation.

Smoke may be visible from the surrounding areas while the acreages are burning.

Signs will be posted in project areas and adjacent land owners will be notified prior to beginning the work, Shoshone officials said.
